Redskin Poms
March Team of the Month

March’s “Team of the Month” is the Redskin Poms from Morris Community High School. The Redskin Pom Squad is comprised of 22 Varsity and six Junior Varsity members and is under the direction of Karen McCluckie, Kelly Laughary, and Jessica Strait. The girls perform at football and basketball games, pep assemblies, and Homecoming events. The team also performs with local dance studio companies at the annual Corn Festival Dance Expo and participates in the Corn Festival Parade.
The Morris Redskin Poms promote school spirit by decorating the football and basketball players’ lockers before each game, along with baking cookies for the teams. The dancers support the community by performing for the participants at the “Relay for Life” cancer fundraiser.
The Junior Varsity and Varsity teams participate in several fundraisers. The girls raise money by holding a car wash, an annual Morris Poms Mini Clinic, and an annual Holiday Craft Fair. A great Parent Booster Club supports the dancers!
The Redskin Poms have established several team traditions such as a team chant, a Big Sis/Little Sis program, whereby the Seniors act as mentors to the younger dancers on the squad, and competition routines are choreographed by the team members and coaches. These team traditions also include team “hair” parties the night before competitions and a rehearsal for family and friends before State Competition. The members share a team quote book, which is used to look back and laugh about the great times shared as a team. To celebrate their success throughout the season, a banquet is held at the end of the year.
The Morris Varsity Poms have won 20 IDTA State Championships and are now under the direction of coaches who were members of the first State Championship squad. The Morris Varsity Poms’ goal is to defend their State Championship titles in the AA Pom Dance and Hip Hop categories! The Morris Junior Varsity Poms’ goal is to defend their State title in the Hip Hop category. The dancers plan to accomplish these goals by working together to continue a winning tradition while having fun and doing what they love to do….dance!
