February’s “Team of the Month” is the Storm Dance Team from Bureau Valley High School. The Storm Dance Team is comprised of 14 members and is under the direction of Coaches Kate Johnson and Jenn Dale. The girls perform at all home varsity boys’ football and basketball games.

The Storm Dance Team promotes school spirit in their daily actions and by participating in other school activities such as dances, plays, and other team sports. The girls perform in the parades of area summer festivals, work at a family picnic for a local business, and hold an annual dance workshop to encourage younger area dancers to get involved and to afford them the opportunity to learn a new skill or enhance an already-existing talent. As you can see, the members of the Storm Dance Team are hard working both on the floor and in the local community, not to mention in the classroom.

The dancers’ main fundraiser is the Bureau Valley Invitational regional competition, as their district rules do not allow any type of door-to-door sales or fundraising. The most important tradition to the team is having their competition routines choreographed by members of the Senior class. This tradition not only showcases the talents of other members of the student body, but also adds a personal touch to the routine and an emotional charge within the team members!  Unifying the team, presenting each routine as a cohesive group and improving their presentation by altering their practice methods, i.e. working in pairs, groups, and classes, are their main goals.

The members’ talents reach far beyond being a part of the Storm Dance Team!  Academic achievers, volleyball stars, lead musicians and members who are also employed, comprise this unique team!  

The girls rarely spend time together off of the dance floor. However, they exhibit incredible team dedication, sharing their love of Dance by combining their unique talents, abilities and personalities.  It’s that same team spirit that contributes to their routines!
